Vacation in Comfort With your Children
It takes a special person to travel with kids – a parent. Children have their own needs. Their idea of a vacation is more “adventurous” than a parent’s. They need constant stimulation and they can get as tired as they are tiring.
There are many top ten type lists of tips for traveling with children: how to ensure they eat well and drink enough, how to dress them for the weather forecasts, how to provide the stimulation they need, how to make sure they don’t drive off with the family car and leave you stranded in the Mojave Desert, etc.
This list is how to travel in comfort – without tying the children to the roof rack — which hopefully will reduce your stress.
Make sure you have plenty of room while traveling.
This is easier said than done. On a plane, everybody is cramped. On a train, everybody is cramped, although a little less so. On a bicycle… don’t even try it.
If you are driving, get a mini-van. Sure, you might be more of a “car” type, and you might have resisted buying a mini-van so far. But pick up a rental van for the vacation just to give the kids a little more room for fighting. (Make sure it has a roof rack, just in case.)
Reality check: Cram enough people into a tiny space and watch everybody get stressed and enraged. See my humorous but true article on hippo rage.
Accommodations along the way can be tricky. Usually it involves a cramped motel for just long enough to sleep, then back in the cramped car (or somewhat cramped mini-van). This is not anybody’s idea of a home away from home.
An accommodation alternative is to camp. When not sleeping, you have all the space in the world (unless you have to huddle under the tarp while the storm passes through). I love camping, but not everyone enjoys a good early morning wake-up wrestle with a grizzly as much as I do, so a motel might be required.
Make sure you have plenty of room when you “get there”.
My childhood vacations, often involved wandering around lost. Assuming you are actually heading for a destination, make sure to have lots of room when you get there. This part is easy. But it requires thinking outside the box. Forget hotels, motels, and inns. Look for private rental homes.
Probably the biggest destination for families is Walt Disney World in Florida. Good news – Orlando, Kissimmee and the surrounding area is just teeming with private vacation homes for rent. In Florida they call them vacation villas, and they offer all the space of home (without having to fix a leaky sink or oil the door hinges or mow the lawn.)
Sharon Baillie is a private villa owner in the Kissimmee area outside Orlando, just a few miles from Disney World, whose property is listed at Orlando Villa Owners. “Our guests enjoy the spaciousness of our 6-bedroom home. They love the private pool and the private yard in which they can relax,” she says. “Parents love the space for children to run around outside, and we leave a box of toys in the garage. So while the parents rest, the children play – and let their parents rest!”
Be prepared for “children being children” events.
Sometimes, stress hits you from behind when the unexpected happens. Like a cut or a scrape … or a child getting sick. Sharon Baillie told me that is why she tells all her villa rental guests where the first aid kit can be found, and exactly where to go for medical attention. This is particularly helpful for her many guests from abroad, who are unfamiliar with the US healthcare system.
She also makes sure her guests are informed about local pollen and viruses in Florida, so that parents can be prepared. Stress is so much more enjoyable when you are prepared for it, don’t you think?
Booking tickets to theme parks and making reservations for just about everything in advance makes the trip less stressful. There is little more difficult than managing young children while trying to get into a theme park or show that requires prior booking.
And to prevent wandering around lost, pick up a AAA Triptik in advance – not that it ever helped us.
Try having your children baby-sat. This might mean bringing along a nanny, such as a grand parent (It’s a tough job, but somebody has to do it.). The car might be more crowded, but if you’ve rented a spacious home for the week, it could just be doable. The other option is to hire a local baby-sitter once or twice. Vacation Home owners can set this up for you, and some hotels might be willing to, too.
When you are single, you can go on adventure vacations. When you are a parent, you get little vacation adventures.
So there you have it. Three ways to reduce the stress of traveling with kids, so you can actually relax on vacation. After all, isn’t that what vacations are supposed to be about?
Preventing Accidental Burns in Children
No parent wants their child to be hurt. Burns are particularly painful to heal and can cause permanent scarring and even death. Many types of accidents by burns are caused by parents just not realizing that there is a danger to their child in a given circumstance. Every parent will try to keep themselves informed of these kinds of situations to avoid.
As a parent you cannot always avoid your child coming in contact with hot water because there is hot water at every sink and bathtub in your house. For this reason parents should set their home water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or 49 degrees Celsius. That is still hot enough to get anything clean that you want to clean. Also you will always want to supervise a young child at the sink or tub, test their bath water before they get in, and teach them as early as you can which side means hot.
The kitchen is a particularly dangerous place for burns. First there is the stove and oven. Cook on the back burners of your stove whenever possible and consider getting a special guard that can be put on the front of your stove to obstruct reaching hands. Always turn the pot handles to the back of the stove. The dials for the stove and oven can be removed when not actually in use. Children should be discouraged from playing at the feet of anyone who is cooking or anywhere near a stove in use. This can be accomplished by putting a baby in a play yard, swing or high chair. Young children may be able to be kept away by safety gates or clear instructions and supervision by their parents. Avoid holding your baby or child while cooking. It only takes a moment for grease to sputter or a young hand to reach down. Extreme care should be taken in teaching your older children to cook. Be sure they know all the rules and are supervised for a long time before trusting them in the kitchen alone. Be sure they understand the inconsistencies of microwave oven heating. Microwaves can be just as dangerous as an ordinary stove in their way.
Other dangers from burns in the home can come from cups of hot liquids. If your child approaches a table where you have your cup of coffee or tea, move it to the center of the table. Spills from hot cups are yet another reason for not having tablecloths or runners on a table. Tablecloths and everything on them can be easily pulled on to the head of a baby or child on the floor. There are at least a hundred other reasons to quit smoking, and now here is another one: matches and disposable lighters should be kept away from children.
Sunburns can be very dangerous in children also. Children will burn much easier than adults with less exposure to the sun. Also because it can cover large areas of the body, serious sunburn can cause a child to go into shock and be a matter to require hospitalization. Always know the limits of sun exposure for your child and take extra precautions like sunscreen, hats and trying to stay in the shade. Even so-called minor sunburns in childhood will increase a person’s likelihood of developing skin cancer as an adult.
These are just a few tips about some of the less obvious sources of burns. Of course, you will always supervise children around campfires, fireplaces and other open flames. Keeping our children safe is all about vigilance all the time. Teach them as soon as they can understand what the dangers are. Hopefully they will not have to become “the burned child that learns best.”
Tips on Raising Children With Autism
Ask any parent and they’ll tell you that parenting a child is the most difficult task they’ve ever encountered. They’ll also tell you it’s the most rewarding. Parenting a child with autism, however, can be a little more stressful. It can also be just as rewarding. The key to bringing up bright and happy children with Autism is to love and nurture them, as you would any child.
Once your child has been diagnosed with autism, you may at first go through a typical sort of panic mode. One of the first things you may want to do is set up counseling for yourself to help you deal with any negative feelings you are having about your child. This can help you in this overwhelming time. You may also want to do some research on your own regarding Autism, as it will help you to understand what you may expect with your child.
When you start researching, you’ll, of course, want to start with your child’s pediatrician. They can certainly help to point you in the right direction. There also may be support groups in your area and you’ll find that parents of children with autism can help you deal with this initial period, as well as being a great source for information.
When you are choosing a program for your child with autism, you’ll want to seek the advice from professionals, such as your pediatrician and other autism professionals. Research the program to make sure it will deal with all aspects of autism, as well as make sure they are qualified to assist your child.
Once you’ve come to terms with your child being diagnosed with autism, there are certain things you’ll need to take care of in the home. You want to bring your autistic child up in a home that is safe, as well as comfortable for your child. One of the first things you should do is a safety check. For example, if you worry because your child likes to sneak outside, you may want to install security locks on the doors. Make sure, however, the child can get out in case of an emergency. You may also want to consider fencing in the yard where your child can play safely.
Some autistic children are very sensitive to touch and even bathing them becomes a struggle. You want your child to be clean however, you also want them to be happy. If this means foregoing a daily bath for one every other day, then by all means, do it. You can also help them to overcome their sensitivity to water by scheduling regular playtimes in water, such as playing with lawn sprinklers and squirt guns. You can make it a fun time and they may come to enjoy bathing.
Most importantly, provide your child with activities at home, as well as outside the home. They may not want to participate in all of them, but it is important for your child to be treated as if they are included. Don’t leave your child home when going out for dinner. Take your autistic child with you and just make sure you go to a family type restaurant so if your child does misbehave in public, it is not such a big deal. Provide your child with an environment filled with different colors and textures. This will help to keep their attention on certain activities and if you provide them with the opportunity for social interaction, this can certainly help them in the long run.
Most importantly, however, provide your child with love. Even if your autistic child does not like to be touched, there are other things you can do to let them know you love them. Talking with your child, even when you don’t feel they are listening is important to their development. Tell them how much you love them, whether they respond in turn or not. A child that is loved will feel this love, even if they have autism.
